Kawhia

We went down to Hamilton last weekend and stayed with our friends Ben & Candice. After our family photo shoot with Neen on Saturday morning, we drove out to Kawhia, to stay at Candice’s parents’ holiday house barn.

It’s literally a barn:

No electricity, totally primitive, away from everything. The boys, Rob & I all slept in the “attic” upstairs, with Ben & Candice (about 16 people in total stayed the night).

Look at the awesome views from their 14-acre property:

Kawhia beach (on the rugged west coast) is about 15-20 min drive from their place.

There is plenty of bush to explore, and a tree swing to play on:

The grass driveway is landmarked by a very old piano (complete with candlestick AND candle):

(Still happily posing for the camera, even after a 2h photo shoot that morning!)

And if you want to take a bath under the stars, there are a couple to choose from. Just light a fire underneath if you want a warm one. ;-)

After a bush walk (to try and find a rouge sheep), some exploring, some tree swinging, and a delicious BBQ dinner, we all rugged up and sat around the fire telling stories, singing songs (Christine had her ukelele!) and toasting marshmallows. We even made s’mores using chocolate thin biscuits … yummy!

Gorgeous spot. Amazing food. Fantastic company.

Memories made.

  1. Wow, stunning! And chocolate thin bisquits, what a great idea! We always use graham crackers but I don’t love them. Trying this out next summer – not thinking about the fact that it is 7 months away, no I am not!

I love that last picture, I sense a beautiful scrap book page out of that one!
