When I was a very little girl, I wanted to be a hairdresser when I grew up. Didn’t all little girls want to be hairdressers?
As I got a bit older, around 8 years of age, I changed my mind. I decided I wanted to be an air hostess (flight attendant). Then I went on my first ever plane trip and experienced the extreme earache that I now deal with on Every. Single. Flight. Yeah, that dream was kinda shot down, right there at 30,000 feet.
I can’t recall what I wanted to be after that, but by the time I entered my teenage years, I had decided that I wanted to be a doctor. That dream carried me all the way through high school and my first year of University. But after getting a taste of the wide range of subjects available in the area of Medical Science, I opted for a slightly different career path. I majored in Pharmacology (the study of how medicines work) and became a medical writer. I’m totally content with my choice of career. And they all lived happily ever after …
Lately, my boys have been talking a lot about what they want to do when they grow up. Ethan has been asking us what WE think he should do. I told him it is too early to know where his real talents and interests lie, but that he will figure those things out over the coming years. But I didn’t want to stifle his enthusiasm, so to further stimulate the conversation, I asked him what HE thought he would like to be.
His answer?
An ice cream truck driver.
I have a sneaking suspicion that the boy thinks ice cream truck drivers get all the free ice cream they want. And I’m guessing that could be part (or perhaps all) of his motivation behind this choice?
Tyler has already had a couple of ambitions in his few short years on earth.
Until recently, he wanted to be the guy who fixes playgrounds. Again, I think the idea of being able to play on said playgrounds before/after fixing them featured highly in his thinking!
However, he has changed his mind now, and wants to work on a garbage truck. He says it will be fun to “ride along on the back, jump off, throw the bags in the back, and jump back on”. Hmmm. Definitely good exercise there, but I’m not sure he realises how much those trucks STINK!
While I am not one to dissuade my children from their desires and dreams, I have to be honest here, and admit that I have *slightly* higher hopes for them both.
Thankfully, my own experience has taught me that dreams do change over time, and once the right “fit” is found, everything falls into place. I also know, from experience, that those dreams can only come to fruition with the right nurturing and a lot of hard work. So at the end of the day, I will encourage my boys in whatever they choose to do, even if their choices take me by surprise.
I can’t wait to discover, along with my boys, what their next big dreams and ambitions will be. Judging by the conversations we’re having right now, I just know they will bring a smile to my face!
hee hee! Tim wants to be a farmer – mainly because he loves all the tractors, combine harvesters, milk tankers etc. He did want to drive milk tankers for a while, but then he decided a farmer was better – more variety perhaps? Anyhow, he has told me that “you and Daddy can live on my farm” and apparently Lydia is allowed to drive milk tankers too.
I too had aspirations to do medicine but my marks weren’t high enough to get in so my life took a different path and I’m very happy it did.

I have similar conversations with Finn – all he knows for sure is that when he grows up he is going to have a Ute and take Emma to school in it, and drive home for lunch from work. I love hearing them dream out loud – so many possibilities!

Teighan wants to be a teacher (that’s been up there for a couple of years now) she also wants to be an Irish Dance Teacher (that’s a new one). Catriona wants to be an artist and Aidan had the airline pilot idea when he was younger and now he doesn’t really know though planning on going to Uni. I love Tyler’s idea of being a playground fixer upper. I don’t think I’ve even seen one of those before but I guess they must exist.

Very cute … I think I agree though I have “slightly higher” hopes for my kids than rubbish truck drivers hehehee
I wanted to be an air hostess when I was a teenager too, but then I found out you had to be a certain height! So that put paid to that idea. Think they have got rid of that rule now though.
Aaron hasn’t said what he wants to be when he grows up, but I do hear very often (at least once a day) that he wants to ‘have’ a Ferarri! LOL So hopefully he’ll learn he’ll need a high paying job to be able to afford one of them hehehe

isn’t it funny how kids decide on a job real early then change as they get older. I never wanted to be a hairdresser cause I always hated the way my hairdresser cut my hair and I don’t want to upset people like she used to upset me! lol

Haha, I wonder how many times they will change their minds over the years?
All through my childhood I wanted to be an archeologist. Then at secondary school that changed to journalism. And look what I ended up – an HR Practitioner

Too funny! I never wanted to be a hairdresser. EVER! I was a tomboy and I wanted to be a forest ranger.
Georgia wants to be a dog trainer, Sam a game tester …
I guess we’ll have to wait and see!

An ice cream truck driver is a fine idea! I loved reading about what you wanted to be when you grew up, I wanted to be a hairdresser too, my mum was a hairdresser at the time, then I changed my mind and decided on teaching but I chickened out of that at the last minute when I was accepted into teachers training college (in those days you had to apply lol) and decided to continue on with my career in banking

Some very cute aspirations there – it’s actually amazing how early kids start thinking about these things to me. I can’t remember ever hoping for a career at a young age – however my husband remembers wanting to BE a Truck! yeah well, that’s boys for ya!

Too funny – my boys both had the chance to at least jump on the back of a truck and PRETEND to be rubbish guys!! LOL
Mr 8 i think will have something to do with animals…. he’s been dead keen on dogs since before he could walk, has been fascinated with all things animal for aaaaages and talks constantly between being a vet, working at the SPCA or being a dog handler like our neighbour.
Mr 5 shows signs of being some sort of scientist or other kind of watcher type person.
These are my impressions – will be interesting to see where it all ends up!!!! Maybe high-wire circus act??!
…………………….. and I LOVE the thinking behind ice-cream truck driver – they make money in our street on a Thursday you can tell Ethan

I love hearing what kids want to be when they grow up. I have a sneaking suspicion your hunches on why they have chosen those professions is bang on
In fact, maybe I want to be an ice cream truck driver too if they get all the ice cream they want! That’s got to beat being an accountant who helps others become accountants

I just love that they want to be ice cream and garbage truck drivers. It just goes to show the innocence of children and it’s wonderful. : )

We loved the ice cream truck driver and the garbage truck men equally growing up. They both were held in such high esteem in our little minds. The garbage truck man was the father of my good friend and everyone knew and loved him. Anyway, no matter what your boys decide to do, I’m sure they will make you proud.

Kids are so funny! When I asked Aurelia recently what she wanted to do for a job when she grows up, she said “I won’t go to work, my husband will”!!! Hmmm, might be time for me to get a part-time job maybe???!! Set a good example, lol.

Hehehe so cute!!
I wanted to be a teacher as a young child…and then from the time I was about 10 I was going to be a veternarian. Studied pre-vet at college…discovered the whoas of drinking and partying and lost my dream to late nights and hangovers. I keep thinking someday I’ll go back and get my teaching degree.
My boys though? They both want to be Heroes….cops, fireman, ambulance drivers. Occassionally, they decide they’ll be wrestlers.
