Double shot

Today Tyler had his 4-year vaccinations. (Hopefully) the last immunisations our household will have to deal with until Ethan turns 11.

I’d told him beforehand what was going to happen, but he really didn’t seem nervous at all. He almost seemed excited about it!

The shots were part of his “B4 School Check” (eek, he starts school in 4 months!) so they also checked his teeth (perfect), height (112cm) and weight (20.6kg). He’s been in the 97th percentile for height since he was 6 months old, and “off the chart” since he turned 2. Today’s measurement was no different; he’s still off the chart. With a 6″2′ father and a 5″8′ mother, he never was going to be short. But I’m thinking he’ll be even taller than Rob when he stops growing.

I also had to fill in 3 different questionnaires relating to his behaviour and development. Guess what? He’s “normal”. ;-)

As for his shots, he was an absolute trooper. They got him to sit on my knee, facing me, and give me a big cuddle with his arms firmly tucked under mine. Then he got an injection in each arm (one nurse on each side). He didn’t cry at all, not even a whimper. Nor did he flinch or protest or try to get free (as apparently LOTS of 4-year-olds do … hence the 2-nurse approach). He just sat there, holding me tight, and showed how brave he was.

We celebrated that bravery with a trip to the $2 shop and a treat from the coffee shop (juice and lolly cake).

Then I splashed out on new wet weather gear for the boys. Oh, and new winter PJs for myself. Hey, it was “buy 3, get 30% off” so I HAD to get a 3rd item, didn’t I? ;-)

It was miserably wet here today, with promises of more rain to come. Ethan doesn’t have a raincoat that fits him, and Tyler’s fell apart today. So at least tomorrow when we venture out into this soggy mess, the boys will stay (relatively) dry. I’m officially over the rain, thank-you-very-much!

  1. It’s been raining here A LOT too…yesterday the kids went outside and plodded around in the rain for an hour or so and came in just soaked. At least they had fun, right?

Glad to hear your guys are all done with shots. Those are never any fun :(

  2. I like how you added the wink after “normal” :)

  3. Well done Tyler!! I like the approach of how they give injections. The hug concept is brillant as is having two nurses. I love new pjs…..and its perfect weather for them.

  4. Nothing like a treat after the jabs – I bet he loved that. No rain here Hannah…just beautiful blue skies – hope I haven’t jinxed it now ROFL!

  5. Well done Tyler for getting his shots … Mitchell had to have three goes at it …

  6. Sure is a wee trooper isn’t he. No rain here….yet!!!! LOL

  7. New Pjs are always welcome – no matter the occasion!

Well done to Tyler – getting those shots really is a nasty thing to happen, but in my mind so worth the peace of mind. I really feel for the kids at that 4 year old one: they just know more about it and the pain. Still, it sounds like the new technique worked well for you guys – it did for us too.

We’ve gotten big long raincoats from the Warehouse this year – perfect for wearing layers underneath that stay on during class but keeping the Mr’s dry to and from school. Hoping the wee bit of wet is over for the day……. sooooo very pleased it’s all circling around Welly “out there” and not over us!

  8. Yay for winter jamies! I just got some myself cause it’s getting SO cold!
A friend and I are trying to plan a trip to Auckland at the end of July…would love to meet up if you’re free!

  9. Wow, what a trooper is right! My oldest HATES shots and always puts up a huge fight and then realizes after that it wasn’t that big of a deal. Way to go Tyler!

    Hope the rain subsides soon…

  10. What a brave little guy! He earned his treats.
Isn’t it a blessing for a mother when our kids are declared the picture of health. What month does school begin where you live? Grace will also be starting Kindergarten in September (the beginning of our school year).

  11. What a star, Tyler is! So brave!

He’s probably going to be one of the tallest, if not the tallest, boy in his class when he starts school.

Yep, lots of wet stuff here too. Been raining all week except today. We have fog instead today, lol. Fieldays is on at the moment, that usually means rain

  12. Here they do one shot at a time, so when one is over, there is still another one. I think the two nurse approach is much better, get it over with all at once.

Thank goodness he’s normal eh? ;)

  13. what a good boy, I hate to think what Katie is going to be like when she goes for hers next year.
It has been pouring down here for the last few days, aweful!

  14. Well done Tyler! and mum too, I sometimes think it’s harder on us.

  15. Oh Hannah…I know you are one of my most consistent readers and commenters! I love knowing that you are there reading and I can always tell when you’ve been to my little world based on the NZ sitemeter ;)

  16. Well done tyler its not pleasent having shots Jack has his 11yr one next year.
I bought Jack a new raincoat today he put his old one on first time in a while the other day and the sleeves are about 3inches too short. My 10yr old now has a lovey polar fleece inner one care of the red shed 30% off fab value..

  17. Great way to do the jabs. I can’t believe that he is nearly 5. I can remember at our housewarming party you were talking about his 3rd birthday the next day…Everyone keeps telling me that David will be 5 in just over 18 months!

  18. Kudos to Tyler for being so brave – certainly not easy when getting shots on both sides! The sale was MEANT for you!! LOL!
