Random thoughts

* I am looking forward to the upcoming long weekend. I get a day off work (Rob does too, but that’s nothing special – he never works Mondays; he works a 4-day week). The kids get a day off school and Kindy. But best of all, the boys are having a sleepover at Mum & Dad’s on Sunday.
On Sunday afternoon, Rob and I plan to see a movie (or 2), go shopping (I pretty much need a whole new wardrobe, so I’m gradually buying new items when I get the chance to shop), go out for dinner, come home for dessert, and SLEEP IN on Monday morning. Bliss!
* Tyler started gymnastics a couple of weeks ago. He really loves it. I took Ethan when he was about Tyler’s age, but we had to give it up when he started morning Kindy. Tyler won’t be moving to mornings until next year, so we can get at least one term of gymnastics in.
* Ethan has started learning the drums! He had his first lesson on Tuesday. He was SO excited about it, both leading up to and after the lesson. I “borrowed” some drumsticks from church, and he’s been practising on an upside-down washing basket. A drum kit has been ordered and should arrive in 2-3 weeks.
* Athletics season has started again, and Ethan is proving that he’s still a little speed-demon! He’s had a 1st, 2nd or 3rd placing in all of his sprint races so far (they do 50, 60 and 100 metres), coming first in quite a few of them. I definitely think this is his “thing”; something he can really sink his teeth into and excel in. I’m proud of him!
Each week, Tyler races against the other 3- and 4-year-olds. He actually came 4th on Wednesday! He hasn’t shown signs of being a really fast runner like Ethan, so he was pretty chuffed to do so well.
* When I was taking Ethan to school on Wednesday, one of the boys (S) who lives in the adjoining street, and also happens to be in Ethan’s class, came up to us. He said, “Ethan, we were thinking of inviting you to our [adjoining street name] Halloween party, but C [another neighbourhood boy's mum] said you would probably be too shy, so we decided not to. And it’s really only for kids who live in [adjoining street name] anyway.”
WTH?!
Luckily Ethan doesn’t even play with S, and hasn’t shown any signs of wanting to, so he wasn’t upset about not being invited to the party. I don’t particularly like S, anyway. He can be quite loud and obnoxious. The boys Ethan DOES play with (some who live on our street or the adjoining one, some who don’t) are much nicer and I’d rather he spent time with them anyway. But seriously, I was pretty shocked to hear what came out of that kid’s mouth! And shocked that another mum (who I do know) would say that Ethan might be too shy. Yeah, he can be shy sometimes … but what better way to help him NOT be shy than to invite him to a neighbourhood party? And if it really IS just for kids who live on the adjoining street, and not ours, then why even suggest asking Ethan? Grrr!! I’m just glad Ethan wasn’t fazed by it.
* Have just started reading a really good book – “The Broken Window” by Jeffrey Deaver. I’ve read all his Lincoln Rhyme crime novels, and this is the latest one. It’s one of those books you don’t want to put down; my favourite kind.
* I won a Fiskars Stamp Press from Up2Scrap yesterday. Apparently it was the “club prize”, but I didn’t even know it was up for grabs. I didn’t enter anything, I think it was just a random draw of all subscribers. Anyway, it was a pretty nice surprise.
Enjoy your weekend, everyone!

yeah I remember those gymnastics days from when I was a nanny- the quietest the children ever were!!!! as for the boy… this really annoys me….. and to be honest WHO has allowed him to speak like that!!! At my Kindergarten I pull children up for being disrespectful…. and rude… and mean…. when I hear kids being rude and parents stand by and do NOTHING i get cross…. verbal bullying is the start of trouble!!!!! you need to stamp on it early and quickly!!!!!! Glad Ethan let it pass!!!!

Ah, athletics, is it too late to sign up? I really think Kamryn would like this too. I’m just soooooooo not clued in on what all these things are or what they entail. Kamryn is a pretty fast runner too and loves to run and walk. Cool that Tyler enjoys gymnastics. I’m wondering about getting Lauryn into something. Dance would be her thing. I think we may just start fresh in Feb. Sounds like a fun Sunday you have planned

me too – looking forward to the weekend that is.
I had something similar happen to me and Tim regarding a birthday party and being told “I’m having a party but my mum said we’re not inviting you” type comment. I felt like saying don’t worry you won’t be invited to ours but restrained myself. Fortunately Tim isn’t into the birthday party thing.
How nice to win something unexpected!

Luckily Ethan was not fazed by that kids comments. Sounds like athletics and gymnastics is just the thing to burn off excess energy. WTG boys.

Gee you guys are busy! Lots happening for you and the kids.
Enjoy your couple time this weekend
Oh, nearly forgot to say: – I remember kids saying stuff like that when I was young too. Not just on the one occasion either. Some kids can be so cruel. Reading that today again, then also in the comment above me, it still gets right up my nose. Hope my kids never get into that behaviour.
Glad to hear Ethan held his head high and let it go.

Little boys need to run and be active and it so great that both enjoy it!

Drums? Eeek, but what fun for him and I hope that you have tons of patience for the noise…lolol!
As for the mean kid; some kids ARE like that…they haven’t evolved and can be very hurtful.
I too remember some sad times when a kid from other kids…
GOOD thing that Ethan didn’t let it bother him….
Isn’t it FUN winning things!
Good for you!.
((hugs))

The movies, shopping and sleeping sound really lovely. I wish it were me.
I am glad that speedy Ethan wasn’t bothered comments of the tactless neighbour.
Sounds busy!

Well done on your win through Up2Scrap they are the best kind of prizes. I hope you have enjoyed your couple time, what a great weekend for a sleepover at ones grandparents. I am a fan of the character Lincoln Rhyme, although I found the book good, it took me sometime to really get into it. I don’t think I was in the right head space for it.

Wow! A day to yourselves for just you two! How lovely! Shopping and a movie sounds great. That is fantastic that your boys are enjoying sports and Ethan is so fast. My son is rather slow, so I envy you a bit. Congrats on winning the stamp too! How fun! I’m sorry about the silly non-invitation from that neighbor, but kids that age have no “brain to mouth filter”. They often just repeat exactly what happened, because they still think talking is just that. They haven’t learned the social nuances of polite conversation. It really doesn’t sound like bullying to me. I’m just glad Ethan wasn’t bothered, which is really all that mattered. Now if the mother would have said it to Ethan, I would be really ticked! I’m guessing Ethan was the only kid outside the immediate area who got considered for an invite.

Yay for having to buy new clothes! : )
I can’t believe that parent said that about Ethan. Don’t people have any discretion anymore? Geez.
Hope you had a great weekend Hannah!

I’m thinking the kid felt some guilt for not inviting Ethan and that is why it came out of his mouth. But it is strange that a mom would be talking about how shy or not shy other kids are and using that as a basis for inviting or not inviting someone. People are just stupid sometimes. That’s all I can say about that. Yay for gymnastics! It’s good to get the exercise and use their bodies while they are young and flexible! I wonder how your movie date was. The Broken Window – I will have to add that to my list of “to be reads!” Congrats on your win! Can’t wait to see what you do with it!
