Snow = no go :-(

Due to reports like this and weather forecasts like this, we have decided to postpone our trip to the snow. :-(

We had to make a decision last night, so we could cancel our accommodation booking without losing our money.
I first heard news of the inclement weather on Wednesday, and I have to say, it completely ruined my day.
I was FREAKING OUT about telling the boys we might not be able to go. But we want them to really enjoy themselves. Somehow, I don’t think “heavy showers, blizzard conditions, cold southwesterlies and severe gales” would serve that purpose very well.

My own memory of seeing snow for the first time is NOT a great one. The weather was awful; strong winds, heavy rain and sleet (not snow, sleet). Mum & Dad still took us up the mountain, since we’d come all that way. I remember sliding down the hill a couple of times, and then high-tailing it for the changing rooms to get out of my freezing cold & wet clothes. Not a lot of fun.

My kids have been sooooooo looking forward to this trip. Remember, Tyler has never seen real snow (Snow Planet doesn’t count!) and Ethan can’t remember going when he was a toddler. They have been literally counting down the days for the last month. Tyler often heads up to his bedroom and comes down wearing his thermals, snow jacket and gloves, asking “how long until the snow?” …

You can understand my anxiety about breaking the news to them, no?

Well, they WERE upset. But they took it a LOT better than I expected. A lot better than me, truth be told. I may (or may not) have cried and pounded my fists and shouted “BUT IT’S NOT FAIR!” on Wednesday.
Ahem.

But I am super proud of my boys and how well they handled such a HUGE disappointment.
Seriously, it is HUGE. We don’t live near the snow. It’s a 5-hour drive away. We don’t spend 3 months a year shovelling piles of white stuff from our driveways. Our school never closes for a “Snow Day”. Rob is a keen snowboarder, but doesn’t get down to the fields as much as he’d like. He LOVES winter, and he loves snow. Naturally, he is good at passing that enthusiasm on to the boys, who just can’t wait to experience it for themselves. They want to make snow angels and snowmen, and have snowball fights. Stuff that lots of kids get to do in their own backyards, whenever they want.
I guess we need to remember that we’ve got the beach in our backyard – and I know many people would love to be that close to the ocean.

Anyway, we have rescheduled our trip for the last weekend in August. Luckily, we managed to get accommodation at the same place.
Ethan stated (rather maturely) that 2 weeks is “not that long” to wait. I reminded him that 2 weeks is, in fact, FOURTEEN DAYS, and his response: “that’s okay, I don’t mind.”

Can I just say … sigh of relief?!

  1. AWWWW sorry to hear you had to cancel but great that the boys took it so well and hopefully the weather in 2 weeks time will be a lot better for the trip to see the snow.

  2. awww I’m sorry you had to postpone your trip, but it’s awesome the boys took it so well… just you to sort out tantrumwise then! LOL

    I’m sure it’ll be worth the wait…

  3. Not many sleeps to go now, and lets face it like you said you don’t want to spend the wekeend away indoors because its stormy, more so when you have travelled that distance, I think the boys would be more disappointed by that. Such crazy weather we are having. Had a wee giggle at your thoughts about postponing the trip though. Well done on your two boys being so good about dealing with the news, thats a credit to you and Rob.

  4. I find it so funny that you have to drive FIVE HOURS for snow. I may also be a little envious. :)

Sorry for the disappointment, though. I hope it all works out in FOURTEEN DAYS.

    :)

  5. You have the best kids. I think you guys will have a blast and it will be even better than you thought!

  6. oh what a shame though…. actually no being trapped in an airport or stuck inside in a foreign city… not so good. So are you coming for the wedding anyway??? was that this weekend too????

  7. your kids are so cool – so glad they took it well. Hopefully in two weeks it will have been more than worth the wait. :)

  8. Shame about the weather, but Ethan has it right … 14 days isn’t so long :-) Hope you have the best weather when you go in a couple of weeks.

  9. Gosh after reading all that I thought for sure you wouldn’t be rescheduling at all lol. I think kids can handle things way better than us as adults give them credit for. And I would much prefer the beach at my back door than the snow…..brrrrrrrrrr.

  10. Awww, bummer. but aren’t your kiddos fantastic?!?!?

  11. Bummer! I am disappointed for you. You’re boys sound so darn sweet. Just like their mom!

  12. Bummer the weather isn’t playing nice… but yes. Much better to have postponed so that you can have fun rather than toughing it out. Snow is MUCH more fun to throw around when it is actually sunny. Good luck with the new date.

  13. I think you’ve made the right decision! Good on the boys for taking it so well. It is disappointing but learning the art of deferred gratification is not a bad thing ;)

  14. That’s great that you still get to go but the delay is a bummer. I am like Angella, I would be pretty okay with snow being 5 hours away… but then again the grass is always greener.

I am so glad the boys took it so well, I can understand why you didn’t want to disappoint them :-)

  15. What a shame, but good decision! Hopefully the weather will be better in 2 weeks time, thats great you could reschedule your accomodation so easily too!

  16. Fourteen days will just fly by in a blur! Aren’t they good lads about the change of plans. You know Hannah, if you lived in Taranaki you could have the snow and the beach right at your front door LOL!

  17. Oh, Hannah, I know exactly how you feel; we have definitely postponed our trip to the snow from this weekend as well. Really crap weather!! Not sure now when we are going to go. Oh well, at least you are going later on – I sure hope the weather cooperates for you then.

  18. So sorry to hear this, but two weeks will go fast! I’m amazed by your boys though, I dream of TOva becoming a patient girl like that!!!

    :)

And by the way. I think snow sux, but that’s just me… ;)

  19. How disappointing, but hopefully the weather will be better in a couple of weeks time making the trip much more enjoyable.

  20. Very disappointing for the boys … but as you said … you want them to have the best memories. Hopefully Mother Nature will look kindly on you later this month.

In the meantime, stay warm and dry.

  21. AW, that is a shame you aren’t going this weekend. Though you still are going, so YEE HA!

Better for the trip to be memorable for the fun things, not for yuck weather.

    Enjoy your weekend anyway. :)

  22. Bummer about not being able to go to the snow but yay for still going in a few weeks and for the boys being so great about it!

  23. That’s a bummer, but what a proud moment to have such mature little boys! And thankfully, you don’t have to cancel the trip, just reschedule it…

  24. That’s too bad you had to postpone the trip but it sounds like it is for the best. I’m glad the boys were so brave when you told them the bad news.

Hopefully you will have wonderful weather when you go.

  25. Oh how disappointing but 14 days is really not that long at all and you so made the right decision wanting the boys to have an enjoyable time, rather than all being soggy and miserable, I must confess I am not a snow bunny but like you will take my boys when they are bigger so they can experiance it.

Well done mummy and daddy for doing what is best even tho it was stink and super big PROUD of you to those awesome little men you have xoxo

  26. That is so disappointing but I am (as usual) AMAZED at how maturely your boys handle the situation!!!
It is something fun to look forward to, and just think, it is even LESS than 14 days now to wait!
    ((hugs))

  27. Bummer. Still I heard on the radio that Turoa might be open until November this year, so hopefully you get some snow time in before then.

  28. What a shame, at least you are able to go again. We too are hoping to go down this season, so hearing (from Sharon up there) that Turoa might be open later is good to hear.

  29. So glad to hear that they handled it well. I think that would have been cause for a major meltdown here!

Glad you were able to reschedule though.

So funny to me that you are talking about going to the snow in August. It’s 100 degrees here! : )

  30. Snow does sound very good right now when we are overheated with no air conditioning! Your boys are so good. It is really hard for kids to understand logical reasons behind disappointment, so I am very impressed. Hope the weather will be better next time around. We have had to cancel many snow trips. If the weather is right, we can be in the snow in a little over an hour, but it is a very small window of opportunity.
