Olympic fever

August 12, 2008

I’m a big fan of the Olympic Games (and the Commonwealth Games, since NZ is part of the Commonwealth). I was excited last week about the 2008 games starting, because I was sure I could pass on some of my enthusiasm to the boys.

We recorded the Opening Ceremony on Friday night and watched it on Saturday. The kids were keen to watch the fireworks, but for some reason I just couldn’t get them excited about watching 200+ countries march into the stadium (my favourite part).

However, I think I’ve been successful when it comes to getting them interested in the actual events.
Okay, so Tyler is not interested at all, but that’s to be expected. After all, he’s only 3.
Ethan swings like a pendulum between (a) mild passing interest (ie. a sideways glance at the TV screen as he runs past, kicking a soccer ball or chasing his brother) and (b) complete & utter obsession.

We witnessed a display of that obsession on Sunday afternoon while at my parents’ place for lunch. The NZ women’s hockey team were playing their first match. The TV was on while we prepared the food, and Ethan started watching it. He was pretty put out that he had to stop for lunch, but as soon as he was done eating, it was straight back to his game.

Loud, passionate shouts of, “GO, GO, GO, New Zealand!!” and “OH NO!!” could be heard emanating from his armchair.

The child has never watched a game of hockey in his life before. But to observe him, you would have been forgiven for thinking he had come out of the womb clutching a hockey stick.

As the game progressed, the adults in the room began to get decidedly nervous. We were losing. And there simply wasn’t enough time to turn it around. Ethan, in his naivety, firmly believed that the Kiwi girls could score 3 goals in 10 minutes, thus winning the match. We braced ourselves for the aftermath.

And oh my word, it was a sight to behold.

Screaming. Crying. Wailing. Thrashing. And eventually, running down the hall and collapsing on the bed in a fit of sobbing.

It took a great deal of cajoling and convincing to calm him down, and reassure him that it wasn’t the end of the world. In fact, just reassuring him that it wasn’t the end of the Olympics was enough. For some reason, he had the idea that it was ALL OVER because of one game. Poor little guy!

Since then, he’s been interested in some of the events. He particularly loved the diving. I know he’ll really like watching the track & field events when they start, because he does athletics in the summer himself (and is a very fast runner, just quietly).

Who knows? Perhaps he will become a big fan like his mum after all!

I am thinking that the hockey you are talking about is not the same kind of hockey as Canadians know it as we could only play it on a frozen pool! Maybe it’s water polo? But they don’t have sticks?

I can’t figure it out and it’s killing me!

Poor Ethan, I would have been upset too if I thought it was all over. I hope he’s all better know:-)

Know how he feels – I have never watched a game of hockey in my life either but because its the Olympics – WOW. The mens game was better last night – at least they won. Sure hope it hasn’t put him off watching.

Yeah, we are watching events we would never pass the time of day on usually.

    It is so exciting!

I love the olympics too – but find there is something a bit *off* with the coverage this time. Not sure what it is – might be the fact I always find the likes of soccer (sorry…”football”) more mind-numbing than watching paint dry and would rather watch things like diving or cycling or ANYthing with anyone / any country rather than soccer just because we have a team playing it ….LOL

I’m with Kami. Hockey IN A POOL? What is going on?

    :)

Okay, I have removed the word “pool” as it seems to be confusing all you Canadians!! LOL. It’s a reference to “pool play”, the games played before the quarter and semi finals. ;-)

Isn’t it funny what they get in their heads…poor Ethan thinking that’s it, the Olympics is over.

I have been watching some of it but the opening ceremony didn’t get a look in. I dont get some of the random sports that have now become events in the olympics. Had a wee giggle at Ethans reaction at the hockey, isn;t it great to have that kind of belief in our national teams.

Oh dear … (although I did grin to myself – sorry Ethan!). Wouldn’t have been nice at the time though. The lessons kids have to learn aye. So not fair.

Awww! I had to laugh though to think he was under the impression it would be over after that one game. Poor guy to take it to heart like that. It’s amazing how much it meant to him. It’s good that it gave you the opportunity to teach him more about the Olympics though, and now he can watch without as much stress.

My guy is the opposite. We were watching swimming the other night and he was like, “when’s this swimming show going to be over?” Of course that’s not as exciting as hockey!

Glad he figured out it wasn’t over & hope he’s still having fun watching. I know we are!

Poor baby!! I remember when Justin flipped out because our baseball team lost… He was pretty young, too. And you know what? Grown men have been known to have tantrums over teams losing, so it doesn’t surprise me that a little kid would. But the men don’t see what they do as tantrums, do they?

OMG, that sounds just like my Matt. Totally devastated if NZ don’t win whatever we are watching. But on the upside, when they do make it through a heat, the opposite is true and he is so joyous. All good stuff to learn.

Uh, I guess I am the only non-fan of the Olympics; I would be happy if they never showed any sport on TV ever again!! I have seen some of it, however, courtesy of my dh, and I have to admit, the rowing has been a little nail-biting…

That’s such a funny story about Ethan; how cute that he thought they were all over ‘cos of one game…

Lol cute. My family is banned from watching the Olympics this time around, because of my serious issues with China re politics and pollution, and of course the ridiculous amounts of $$$ spent on preparing to host it, whilst people are still starving to death each day.
Lol…opps, a rant, I do apologise. Perhaps it’d be different if I liked sports!

Only 1 of my 4 kids ‘wants’ to watch the games. She was up early to watch the opening ceremonies. I enjoy them, BUT I hate that they cancel Coronation Street for the duration. I *love* my Corrie!
