I love being Queen
July 2, 2008
I live with boys. I’m outnumbered, 3 to 1.
With a husband and 2 boys, things tend to get pretty loud around my house. And if I didn’t have OCD, my house would also get pretty messy, pretty fast.
My boys constantly amaze me with their endless energy and vivid imaginations. I sometimes despair of the poop jokes, the wrestling, and cleaning up messes around the base of the toilet. But most of the time? I love it.
Because I love being Queen.
Take last night, for instance. I took Ethan out to a restaurant for dinner, just the 2 of us. I wanted to do something special to show him how proud I am of his excellent report.
We had a really nice evening. He dressed up for me – he wore his best shirt and his “good” jeans that I absolutely love. Ethan HATES wearing jeans, but he chose to wear them because he knew it would make me happy. How sweet is that?
While we waited for our food at the restaurant, we played noughts & crosses on the back of the kid’s menu (it was an activity sheet, and they provided felt pens too). During dinner, I told him how proud I was of him. On the way home, he thanked me for taking him out, and told me how much he loved me. He also told me that I’m his favourite person in his family. I know that’s not really true, but I must admit I enjoyed hearing it!
I experienced more royal treatment this morning. This time, from my honey.
I was TIRED last night. But I have deadlines, so I worked for most of the evening (while Rob did the dishes, hung out the washing, and tidied up. I know!! I may be the only girl, but I certainly don’t have to do all the work around here).
At 11pm, I finally stumbled upstairs to bed. I was completely dead to the world this morning, and Rob let me sleep while he got Tyler ready for Nana’s house. I got up when Rob left at 7.30, and found he had turned on my computer and the oil heater, so the room was toasty and warm. He’d also left a note on my desk:
I love you.
Have a good day.
I’ll be thinking of you.
Rob xx
I texted him to say thank you, and he wrote back:
U dsrv it, u r v special.
All together now: awwww.
I can’t finish without mentioning Tyler. My little hurricane. He’s always on the go, always talking or singing or generally making noise. But there are also the sweet moments where I see his softer side. Like last night, when Ethan and I got home, and Tyler was already in bed. Rob told me Tyler was a bit sad because he had wanted me to put him to bed. So I went up to see him and say goodnight. Tyler is not an overly affectionate child, but he does like to snuggle with me when I say goodnight, and I cherish those snuggles.
The thing I love most about Tyler is that he wears his heart on his sleeve. If he’s not happy, everyone knows about it! But on the flipside, when he is happy, the whole world smiles with him. Honestly! That kid has the best smile and the BEST laugh. His preschool teachers have said he has the loudest laugh out of all the kids at preschool.
His smile can brighten my darkest day. And his hugs make me feel so good inside.
I know my boys love me, and for that I am blessed.
After Tyler was born, I realised there’d be no pink frilly dresses or Barbie dolls in this house … and that I’d need to learn to love Batman, trucks and shoot-em-up games.
But honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.
There’s no sharing the male affection in this house. It’s all MINE!

i know what you mean 2 little boys no little pink things was a little saddening for all of 5 seconds but now I love it! my boys are just too cute for words and not a day passes that they don’t tell me I love you or you’re the best cook ever etc … I love being their favourite woman sometimes i have to dress up but i always get the special shiny red cape and I am christened super girl, it is usually on a day when i am at my wits end, wanting to pull my hair out and praying for a picking up lady, so it is always a great reality check that life is good and I love being their mum …
have a great day
Leonie
oh my husband is one that when he has the time always pitches in and helps me out, i think he has the ocd in this house lol …
Yay, another Queen! Thanks Leonie for sharing this, it sounds like your boys are totally gorgeous. Love that you have to be “super girl”, that’s awesome!

Awwwww, how sweet! You’ve said many lovely things. Mr. Tyler doesn’t seem to happy when I see him lately. He isn’t very willing to say ‘hi’ to me either. But then Lauryn said she wasn’t able to say hi to him today either lol. It’s nice Rob makes you feel special too in all the hustle and bustle! He obviously hasn’t lost sight of where it all started

oo – boys and toilets. ugh.
But I wouldn’t swap my boy for anything.
(True – I now have a girl too, but really I would have been fine with another boy.)
You never know, you might get some girl grandies.

your so lucky Hannah, the love of a wonderful man and two beautiful boys.
I know what you mean about boys though, having just the 2 boys for 13 years before Miss Katie came along and changed our worlds. Boys are loud, messy and endless fun and the older they get the more fun they are..the toys just get bigger and noiser lol. Enjoy them while they are young, they grow up far to fast!

Oh this is a great post Hannah… sometimes I get down and out about the lack of pink and frill around here. It’s good to be reminded of the wonderful bonuses to being surrounded by 3 wonderful men.
We have that in common my dear friend!
Thanks for the happy tears

What a lovely post. You are a lucky wife and mom. I think little boys and their mommies have an extra special bond. That was so nice that you and Ethan had time together like that!
I love having my 3 guys too. And you are right, nothing beats being the “Queen!” : )

It’s good to be Queen. I was Queen too even though I had a boy and a girl. Let’s just say I ruled. My daughter’s name means princess so we always called her that which meant I had to be the Queen.
Great post.
