The Present
May 13, 2008
Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling five balls in the air. You name them – work, family, health, friends and spirit – and you’re keeping all of them in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls – family, health, friends and spirit – are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked, damaged or even shattered. They will never be the same. You must understand that and strive for balance in your life.
How?
Don’t undermine your worth by comparing yourself with others. It is because we are different that each of us is special.
Don’t set your goals by what other people deem important. Only you know what is best for you.
Don’t take for granted the things closest to your heart. Cling to them as you would your life, for without them, life is meaningless.
Don’t let your life slip through your fingers by living in the past or for the future. By living your life one day at a time, you live all the days of your life.
Don’t give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over until the moment you stop trying.
Don’t be afraid to admit that you are less than perfect. It is this fragile thread that binds us together.
Don’t be afraid to encounter risks. It is by taking chances that we learn how to be brave.
Don’t shut love out of your life by saying it’s impossible to find.
The quickest way to receive love is to give; the fastest way to lose love is to hold it too tightly; and the best way to keep love is to give it wings.
Don’t run through life so fast that you forget not only where you’ve been, but also where you are going.
Don’t forget that a person’s greatest emotional need is to feel appreciated.
Don’t be afraid to learn. Knowledge is weightless, a treasure you can always carry easily.
Don’t use time or words carelessly. Neither can be retrieved.
Life is a journey to be savoured each step of the way. Yesterday is History, Tomorrow is a Mystery, and Today is a gift. That’s why we call it The Present.
______________________________
I don’t think it was a coincidence that I read this today.
Sometimes I feel like juggling those five balls is too hard. Too often I treat the “work” ball as though it is made of glass, and the other balls as though they are made of rubber.
I definitely needed to be reminded that today is a gift. I need to live for today – not dwelling on the past, not wishing that tomorrow would come NOW, just enjoying today for what it is.

We all need the reminder, Hannah! Thanks so much for sharing. I’ve read this one before too but it is so beautiful and so truthful, it is worth reading over and over.
Hugs to you!

That’s a goodie. I used to have that one printed out and stuck on my wall above my work station. It was a really handy reminder for those trying days.

I really like this. And I too have been needing some ‘reminders’ and this has helped. It’s something that I think is important for children to know too. Maybe something I will scrapbook, think I might

Yep – I’m a lurker, but I had to come out of hiding to say how much I appreciate reading this – I too have been guilty of treating work like glass – silly how we do that really isn’t it?

I love this – I have it printed and stuck the the wall in my bedroom by my mirror. You are aware of my struggles with depression – I was given this as a therapy tool. The last sentence is drilled in – today is a gift – you go Hannah for having the courage to share this and your own own feelings about it :O)

I am like you with the balls, the work one sometimes gets priority when it shouldn’t. What a great read, this is something Dave and I were discussing this very thing this weekend. For me the struggle I am having is holding love too tight, I need to give it wings again, set it free. Sometimes I forget and slip up, I needed this, thanks you!

I needed to read this too.
If you don’t mind I would like to copy this and email it to my wider circle of friends?
