Silver lining
May 8, 2008
When life gives you lemons, what do you do? Do you make lemonade? Or do you allow yourself to feel sour and bitter?
Yesterday I was feeling annoyed about a few things. Just silly little things that really “ripped my nightie”, so to speak.
But today I have made a decision. Being annoyed uses way too much energy! So I am attempting to look at things a different way and find the silver lining in each seemingly sour situation.
* I found out yesterday that Tyler’s preschool (daycare) fees are going up. By about 25%.
I was bummed, because we were hoping to save some money by reducing his hours at preschool. Now that he is going to afternoon Kindy, he only needs to be at preschool on Tuesday & Thursday mornings, instead of all day. We should have been saving $40/month. But with the fee increase, we are now paying THE SAME AMOUNT that we were paying for 2 full days!
Silver lining :: I also found out yesterday that Tyler’s preschool will be finally opting into the Government’s optional 20 Free Hours scheme from 1 July. Which means, since he is only there for 10h/week, that preschool will cost us NOTHING. We will be saving over $300/month!
* Rob was feeling sick last night, with a suspected tummy bug. The nausea was getting progressively worse as the afternoon/evening wore on. Rob rarely gets sick, so for him to get the barf bucket out, I knew it must have been bad. The thought of a tummy bug weaving it’s way through the entire family? Not worth thinking about.
Silver lining :: I prayed for him. His nausea went away. By the time he went to bed, he was feeling completely fine.
* I have been having some issues with the database I use for doing my work at home. The internet platform they use for remote access is, er, temperamental, to put it mildly. Any miniscule internet outages cause it to disconnect (and cause me to lose whatever work I had done since the last Save). These are the “normal” internet outages that Outlook and most websites are able to recover from without any problem whatsoever. They are outages so small and unimportant that you normally wouldn’t notice them. But with the platform I use? They are definitely noticeable. I am tired of saving my work every nano-second and turning my modem off and on a million times a day. Slight exaggeration, but you can sense my frustration, no?
It’s nothing that I can fix. The IT department at work are “hoping to make the platform more stable in the future”. Hmmm … the words “in the future” don’t exactly fill me with hope.
Silver lining :: I know I am incredibly lucky to be able to work from home. A few little blips during the day are TOTALLY worth it to be here 24/7. I must always remember that. I know that many other mums would give anything to be able to work from home.
If anything, I am getting a lesson in patience!
Okay, I’m off to make some lemonade.

Lemonade is always better than lemons! Way to frame things. I really believe that we decide how we will view the world and the way we choose to see things is magnified back to us tenfold – if good it is good and we have more good things happen in our lives – if bad we tend to only see the bad.
As they say, “It is all in how you look at it…”

I have been trying to do that for the past year. Granted, I had severe depression last year and I am now on Zoloft but I have really tried to change my attitude when things go wrong. My son (26 years old) has a really tough time turning something bad into something good.
But a positive attitude really works and it really is easier to be happy then be upset and a lot more fun.
Good for you to be able to see the SILVER LINING.

Well put as always Hannah, I can totally relate to the hassles/pluses of working from home. At the moment we have roadworks in our street which is causing all things electrical to go haywire, but I do love working for myself from home. I can work in my jammies if I want to (although our office is outside so the neighbours would get an eyeful) … LOL
It’s hard to see the positives in things a lot of the time, thank you for pointing that out and helping us all see things in a much brighter way!

Great attitude!
Sometimes it’s hard to do, but it’s always better if you can.

You really do have such a good attitude and I think it just naturally attracts good things to you. And I can’t think of a nicer person for nice things to happen to. And there is nothing better than homemade lemonade. MMMmmm.

Yipppe for lemonade, it’s like the half full half empty glass situation. So pleased that you could turn it around.

good attitude Hannah. Love it when things work out better than you first thought.
Now I wonder what could be the silver lining in having to take our cat to the vet this morning and being told the bill will be approx $250+ ???

I seriously enjoy reading you. Because you make my heart lighter.
All too often, I get bogged down by the little minute details that are annoying. Silver linings are abound, but I don’t always see them.
Here’s to more and more lemonade
BTW “ripped my nightie” is freaking hilarious! That’s def. a new one to me

This is a fantastic post Hannah! It is not easy to see the silver lining a lot of the time, but it is more rewarding in the long run. Thanks for the wonderful real read!

LOL at the “ripped my nightie” phrase… hadn’t heard that one before.
I also need to watch the self pity thing.

“Ripped my nightie”- precious Hannah. I am in wholehearted agreement with the ladies above – you bless us with your view on life – you are wise and you learn from life and share these lessons.
I love reading your blog babe – keep on turning the clouds over and finding those silver linings.

I am an absolute believer that every cloud has a silver lining, it’s just that it doesn’t always reveal itself at the time. I haven’t always felt like this and it has taken years to turn my old learned thinking patterns around to what they are today.
We either roll with change or get stuck in an even worse place, I believe.
Love your thinking and your honesty, Hannah.
Neat that the daycare $$$ sorted themselves out and that Rob is now feeling better.
Can totally relate to the IT issues. Our Broadband is TERRIBLE. We have changed providers several times to see little or no improvement. It’s basically an exchange problem, and we can now laugh when we remember the day that the guy at Telecom said to hubby (after his one millionth call about our problems) “Why don’t you just move?” ROFL – yeah right.
We just decided that it is out of our control so we aren’t going to get our undies in a twist over it anymore. It’s not worth it.

Can totally relate Hannah – I currently get a gov’t rebate cheque for Kaitlyn’s kindy, but it will be gone next month when she turns 6. The good news is we’ve been putting that money into her Education fund, so it’s still a bonus.
