Ode to Grandparents
February 11, 2008
There is something very special about grandparents, and the bond they have with their grandchildren.
My parents are “Nana & Grandad” to the boys. Ethan and Tyler are so lucky (no, make that blessed!) that my parents a) live 5 min away, and b) are willing and able to play an important role in their lives.
For almost 5 years, Mum has been looking after the boys one day/week. At first it was just Ethan, but when Tyler was born she said she would happily continue to look after both of them. Now Ethan is at school, so she just has Tyler for most of the day. Because of Mum’s willingness to help out, we have been able to keep daycare to 2 days/week, which is the maximum we were willing to have them in there. Rob and I do one day/week each, and that’s childcare covered!
Mum & Dad also babysit regularly, which allows Rob and I to have some time together. The boys love to go to Nana & Grandad’s house for a “sleepover”, and I think my parents enjoy it just as much!
But there is much more to the role of “Grandparent” than glorified babysitter (although that job is very much appreciated). I cherish the quality and quantity of time my parents have for the boys. They are never too busy to play at the park, read stories, or make “contraptions” out of cardboard boxes and straws. They are never too busy to listen to silly jokes or play with bubbles. There is nothing they wouldn’t do for the kids, and they jump at the chance to spend time with them.
The typical image of a grandparent involves a fair amount of grey hair, lots of wrinkles, a house that smells like mothballs, and a walking stick or two. But that image is not one to describe my parents! I love the fact that they are still young (53!) and COOL and have lots of time and energy to spend with my kids.
This is them on Christmas Day:

And this is them at Hahei last week:
Thanks Mum & Dad, for the awesome job you are doing. You are so special to us, and we love you!

You are blessed indeed.
Matthew’s parents are taking the kids while we go away, but when they lived here?
We only saw them on holidays. It was heartbreaking.
I am glad that you have such great grandparents for your boys!!

Bonus you having them so close to you Hannah – it’s something I have always wished could happen for our 2 but know it never will.
What a lovely tribute to your mum and dad.

It’s wonderful that you are all so close Hannah. It’s lovely that they enjoy being invovled, and I love the way you have organised your childcare – it seems like a great balance for all.

You are very blessed. I too have seen just how cool your parents are. May they stay young at heart and always have good health so your children can keep building those memories.

You are very lucky! I miss the fact that my kids don’t know my parents. I worry that they will miss out so much of that part of their heritage.

Andrews parents are a bit like that and only a minute round the road as well. Our children are their only grandchildren and have a really great relationship with them too. I think we are both quite lucky really.

Oh it’s so wonderful to hear how much your parents are loving being grandparents. And I am sure the rewards for that are in many a smile, hug and a kiss from their grandkids. Just lovely that your family can share this.

Sweet post. The main reason that I will never leave the snowy Midwest of Illinois is that my family is here. There is no place beautiful enough to replace the love of my family…
And my goal in life is to still hold hands with my husband on the beach while we walk with our own grandchildren. Very touching.

I was afraid to read this when I saw the title in my reader. I thought it was going to be a sad story and make me cry. Instead it made me cry with happy tears. How wonderful for you/your children to have these fantastic parents/grandparents in your lives! You truly are blessed. And I couldn’t think of anything better for such a lovely family!

How wonderful Hannah! I was not close to my grandparents at all and it’s stories like this that make me sad about it. But my kids have the best grandparents even if they don’t live 5 mins away.
I wish they did though!
Yay for grandparents:-)

What cool grandparents they are. I agree with every word you say. Grandparents are so much more. Sadly, my boys don’t have any living grandparents and I often get a pang of times gone by.
My Mum often used to say that a grandparent gets to have the fun without all the work. How lovely is that?

Hannah, you definitely have a way with words … thank you for sharing.
Hope your parents read your blog – I’m thinking that this post will definitely bring a tear to their eyes and if they don’t already know how much you love them, they will now!!!
Awesome!!!

The Sunday after next my girls and I are having all the grandmothers in our family (there are lots!) over for ‘Grandmother Tea’. We’re going to dress up fancy and eat delicate treats.
Grandparents are great!

It’s wonderful that your boys have such a great bond with their grandparents. It really is a blessing. I wish my Mum was still around as she was really looking forward to being a Nana, & I know my son would have adored her (and she him).

Hannah I love this post. While its great that they live close by, more important is that they want and like to be part of their grandchildrens lives. How cool and special is this. Both you and your children are incredibly lucky and blessed to have such wonderful grandparents.
