Back to school

February 7, 2008

Today was Ethan’s first day back at school. His first day in Year 2! I decided to take a photo on the first day of school each year, so here is 2008’s offering:

Notice the newly shaved head? That was a surprise to me. I was putting Tyler to bed last night, and when I came back downstairs I could hear the buzzer. Stepped into Ethan’s room and Rob had just finished giving him a #2! He looks like a little baldy!

I knew Ethan was feeling a bit anxious about starting school again. Sure, he was excited, but also slightly apprehensive about all the “new” things. A new classroom, a new teacher, new kids. And as far as I’m concerned, those anxieties are completely normal and justified. I remember dreading the first day of school each year. Change is hard when you’re young. Heck, it’s hard when you’re older, too!

Anyway, there were a few tears at school this morning when the bell rang, but overall he was very brave. I could see he was really trying to be strong and hold the tears back. And he wasn’t crying for me to stay, he just shed a couple of tears and said “I love you”. He knew it was time for me to leave, and he was just feeling a bit sad about that. Less than 2 minutes later, he was smiling, waving and giving me a “thumbs up”. I could see from the look in his eyes that he was really trying to hold it together, but I was so proud of him!

I wasn’t worried about him after that, because I knew he would have a good day. I was right! When I arrived to pick him up, he was so happy and said “Mummy, I had a GREAT day! I LOVE my new class”.

So it’s all good! We’re past the initial hurdle, and ready for a new and exciting year! :-)

What a great haircut. Sounds like he had a great day! What a brave man, I think we forget how anxious we feel when we start new jobs etc too. Great to hear the first day went so well – makes the rest so much easier!

Glad to hear his first day went well! I think it’s more nerve-wracking for the parents, at times…

I can’t imagine my husband shaving my boys’ heads! But as long as Ethan likes it, that’s all that matters.

I agree Hannah, change is never easy for anyone , regardless of age, and didn’t he cope beautifully with it. So glad to hear he had such a great start to his new school year!

That is amazing how well Ethan has readapted to school….I have a feeling I will be the one bawling when we get to that stage and my kids will take off running and not look back.

Awww, he looks so grown up, Hannah!!

Those first days were always so exciting and anxiety riddled for me too. It’s no wonder my boy has the anxiety issues he does ;)

I love the thumbs up…it must be this age because Zachary used thumbs up ALL. THE. TIME. for everything!

Your young man looks so totally grown up with having had a ‘close shave’ … and how awesome is that … telling his Mum he loves her before school and giving the thumbs up – so very special memories Hannah … cherish them.

Sounds like a GREAT start. Loved reading about your kids quirks too. Your youngest reminds me of my small boy – especially as regards clothes!
