When thousands of women meet in one place to praise God, study his Word and apply it to their lives, Satan is not too happy. He gets out his flaming arrows, and has a bit of target practice. And this weekend, he hit a few of those targets.
As I mentioned in a previous post, my Mum, sister and I went to Sistas over the weekend. Another friend from church (Sandra) also came with us. We travelled together in mum’s car, and stayed in a motel in Manurewa. The conference was awesome – great music, great speakers, great fellowship. We learned so much, and had a fantastic time.
But Satan tried to steal our joy. He tried to rob us of the blessings we received. How did he do that?
1) I had a horrible head cold from the first day of the conference. A sore throat and throbbing headaches which lasted all day and all night. But I wasn’t going to let that stop me from having a good time.
2) Our motel was awful. Dirty and awful. Other ladies from the conference were also staying there, and they had FLEAS in their beds!
3) On Saturday night, mum’s car was stolen from outside Valentines restaurant in Manukau. We had a 2h dinner break, so decided to meet up with another friend (Glenys) and her two daughters (Shelley and Lisa). We were in the restaurant from 6-7pm, but when we got outside, mum’s car was gone.
Thankfully we all had our wallets and phones with us in the restaurant, but my second bag was in the car. It contained my journal, all my conference notes, 2 new CDs, sunglasses and some other bits and pieces. Sandra’s bag was also in there, and it held her cheque book, make-up, glasses, conference notes, a CD and a conference T-shirt worth $45! Leah had left a plastic bag with a new CD in it.
Of course Mum was really upset and we were all in shock. But we decided right then and there that we were NOT going to let Satan get to us, so we went straight back to the conference and carried on!
4) When we arrived home, I got a horrible tummy bug. I spent all day yesterday in bed (apart from frequent trips to the bathroom). Later I discovered that Glenys and Shelley had the same thing! We are not sure if it was from something we ate at Valentines, or just a bug.
But despite all that, I’m determined to fight. I’m not going to let any of the things that happened over the weekend rob me of what I got out of the conference. Because I know that’s what Satan is trying to do. He’s trying to fill my mind with thoughts like “poor me” and “why is this happening to me?” so that I will forget the things I have learned. No way, jose! I’m not forgetting a single thing. I may have lost all the notes I took, but God has already helped bring those things back to my mind.
For me, one of the most challenging messages at Sistas was how to get rid of a critical and negative mindset. It’s something I struggle with, but I’m determined to change my thinking. I’m not going to focus on the negative things. Did you know that 77% of what we think and hear is negative? That’s not what I want for my life, and it’s not what God wants for my life. His power can’t work in me if I am critical and negative. I’ve made a conscious decision to change my attitude, to spend more time thinking about positive things, and less time being critical and judgemental.
I will NOT be allowing the “bad” things that have happened over the past few days to overshadow the good things!! I am NOT giving up!
Good for you Hannah, great attitude. I hope you are feeling better from your tummy bug. I’m sorry to hear about the events of your weekend are glad you can see the bright side. My grandad has a saying that I like,”When a door slams shut the draught causes a window to open”. I like to remember this in harder times.

Woah, Hannah your attitude is awesome! It would be far too easy to get down in the dumps after such a challenging weekend of bad happenings. I truly hope you are feeling better (I personaly believe the tummy bug would be from Valentines and would report it. I have had far too many bad experiences at V’s around the country, never go there anymore!)
Congrats on your 1st place on SE and good luck this week!

Sorry to hear about some of the not so good things happening in the weekend. Love how you are determined to focus on the good. I so agree with you Hannah, the way we feel and think changes us and determines how we see the world.
*big hug* and speedy recovery!

Wow – what a weekend. When things like that happen to me in rapid succession – my experience has been that there are huge blessings on the other end of it. It makes it so much easier to endure difficult times! I hope you are feeling better – and I can’t wait to see what blessings are going to be yours soon!

Just when I thought I had some issues to be dealing with I read this! Firslty, I need to hang my head in shame cos I doubt my issues even rank alongside all your incidents over the weekend – and perhaps because I don’t let go too easily. I could learn from you.
You are an inspiration: the fact you can still attempt to shrug it all off and be positive is a fantastic thing. I really hope you feel better soon. And I hope your mum gets her car or insurance sorted out easily.
As an aside – to have 3 of you get sick with a tummybug after eating at V’s, well I think that’s a wee bit more than coincidence. However you choose to handle it, it’s clear it will be with great dignity.
Go you!!

It stinks that you had to deal with all of that but how wonderful that all of you women stuck it out and didn’t allow it to ruin your fellowship. I’m glad you are being stubborn in a positive way and not allowing the negative to get to you. It is hard to do in the face of all that you dealt with but you are succeeding!!! You wrote this post and even though you related everything that happened, you didn’t do it in a negative way and you kept the important things in focus. It would have been the easy way to give in and you didn’t!!! Cheers to you, my friend!

You hit the nail on the head! God has shown you so much this weekend, and don’t let the negatives detract from it.

Wow go YOU … what a weekend. I’m glad that you enjoyed your fellowship.
It sucks big time that so many things went ‘wrong’ – and ‘wrong’ really seems like a major understatement.
You are such a bright and bubbly person and I’m thinking that it is going to take something major to knock you down for any length of time my friend.
You look after yourself !!!

I admire your attitude. I am thinking this might be another reason not to eat at Valentines though (I mean aside from the food….) Sorry you had such a bad time of it

Hope everything is improving for you. Yep we have to focus on the good – we have so much to be grateful for – and that is what we must focus on – even in the midst of what seems a bad run.

I hope you are feeling better! I’d say it’s that V place… and I would give them a call. Not to be mean but because they need to know that. It’s part of their service thing to provide safe food.
Yeah – the big S doesn’t bother with those he’s already got under his thumb eh.
