Tyler has a double ear infection.
There’s a bit of history here that you should know about. He had grommets (tubes) put in when he was 18 months old. You can read all about it here. And here. And here.
Since the surgery, things have been pretty good. One of the grommets fell out after about 9 months (bummer!) and he got a couple of mild ear infections after that, but thankfully they cleared up on their own. I say thankfully, because Tyler doesn’t respond well to antibiotics. Probably because he was on them constantly for the first 4 months of his life due to repeated urinary tract infections. He eventually had an operation to fix that problem, but in the meantime he’d built up somewhat of a resistance to the normally prescribed children’s antibiotics. Stink, huh?
Anyway, Tyler has had 4 colds in the last 6 weeks. We had taken him to the doctor sometime during cold #1 or #2, just to check his ears. One of them looked a bit “dull” so we had to keep going back every couple of weeks to check it. Rob took him on Monday, and it was still looking dull. The doctor gave us the usual line: bring him back in 2 weeks, or earlier if he gets another cold. The next day, he got cold #4. So it was off to the doctor the next day. One of his ears looked normal, and the other one was “just starting”.
The doctor wanted to take a watch-and-wait approach, so we had another appointment 24h later. As soon as she saw Tyler the next day (yesterday), she said “He’s full of beans!” (he was!) and “I’m sure his ears will be fine, but we’ll just have a quick look”.
She almost fell off her chair when she looked at his ears. The one that was normal on Wednesday was “absolutely horrible” and the one that was “just starting” was even worse! Oh, and the second grommet has fallen out (bummer again!) She was shocked that he was so bright and chirpy, and had slept all night! Well, that’s what both my boys have been like with their ear infections. I’d never know if I didn’t make the doctor’s surgery my second home!
He’s now on antibiotics. The doctor agreed that we wouldn’t even *try* the usual ones (aka the ones that never worked in the past). Instead, we’d pull out the big guns. Augmentin. The diarrhoea started less than an hour after his first dose. Nice.
Now we have a hard decision to make. Do we get the grommets put back in?
The doctor said if this infection is recurrent, or if he gets another one before winter/spring is over, then we probably should get them put back in. But she’s hoping that we can get him through the winter months without any more. And by the time next winter rolls around he’ll be almost 4 and his eustachian tubes will be bigger. That’s what happened with Ethan, he grew out of them before he turned 4.
I really don’t want to go through another operation.
He’s had 2 already, and he’s not even 3! It was traumatic enough last time, and he wasn’t really old enough to know what was happening then. At age 3, I shudder to think about how he’d handle it.
So I’m thinking of looking into some alternative therapies, if necessary. A few things have been recommended to me: Bowen therapy, tea tree oil, ear candling, echinacea, cranial osteopathy, homeopathic ear drops, etc.
I’m the kind of person who needs to research things well before trying them. I’m also the kind of person who believes in the power of prayer. So if you’re a believer, have a word to the Big Guy for me.
He’ll be listening.

In other news, Sharon has given me the “Rockin’ Girl Blogger” award! Thanks, Sharon!
I’m not going to nominate anybody this time, as quite a few people on my blogroll have already received this award. Besides, I found it hard enough choosing recipients for the “Nice Matters” award, and I’m worried that I upset some of the people I didn’t choose!
Sorry to hear your son isn’t feeling well. Ear infections can be so painful. Poor kid.
In other news – You definitely DO rock and deserve that award. I can sympathize about not wanting to upset anyone, and I notice you do have quite a big blogroll so it would be hard to choose recipients to pass it on to! Hopefully nobody is really upset with you. You are too nice to have to worry about that.
Keeping you and Tyler in my thoughts and prayers! Keep us posted.

Get better soon Tyler!
Ear infections are nasty…. luckily for us Mr 6 got away with just a few… the first one was when he was a baby and I couldn’t understand why he was being such a pain about being put down – nothing major – just grizzly. Then 2 days later…. gunk oozing… niiiiice! Needless to say, I hightailed it to the dr’s and she was great! Ever since then, I seemed to know something was coming on and would get to the dr’s just as it was all starting… so would always take 2 trips to get it confirmed!!

Oh the poor thing. Nothing worse than earache (except maybe toothache). Hope he doesn’t have to have more grommets – warmer weather can’t be that far away surely!!

I soooooooooo hope the antibiotics work and there aren’t any more infections! I know what my winter was like last year and I’m glad Lauryn hasn’t had any repeats. Something simple and easy that seemed to work for us was walks along the beach. I know it’s cold but bundle him up and let the salt air get to his ear. It worked a treat with Lauryn!!! I couldn’t believe how something so simple could work. I also think looking into something alternative if you need to is a better idea than more grommets. I wasn’t impressed by what the ear specialist said about the weakening of the ear drum each time. So anything that doesn’t mean Tyler needs an operation will be good! I’m sure you guys will find something that you are happy with
*hugs*

I wonder if giving him acidophilus will help with the diarrhoea?
It is a terrific adjunct to antibiotics for adults..maybe try just yogurt?
((hugs)) to you both!

awwwww Hannah that sucks. Poor Tyler he is a trooper though. I hope he manages to get through the rest of winter without a cold. As for the nice award I don’t know how you could possibly offend anyone so get that thought out of your head.

I’m sorry Tyler’s ear infections are returning. That’s a hard situation deciding about surgery. I’ll pray for you in deciding what to do. It sounds like your son is a trooper.

Poor Tyler! Hope he feels better soon.
I also am prone to ear infections that pop up during a cold due to small eustachian tubes. The ENT specialist said for me to start using the nasal sprays (Canadian Rx names Nasonex/mometasone or Flonase/fluticasone) right away when the cold starts to prevent the tube blockage, and hopefully the infection. Very few of the antibiotics work for me either, and I actually had an ER Dr. prescribe me painkillers as it would just “go away” on its own. Heh – after 6 wks of agony one summer, I highly doubted that the infection was getting better by itself. Any kind of surgery shouldn’t be taken lightly, and even more so on kids.
HTH & G/L Hannah!

Sorry to hear about Tylers ear infections, I totally sympathise as we had major problems with Samuels ears until he was almost 8 years old! Hope you find something that works for him soon, we did the grommets and they helped but didn’t actually stop him getting recurrent ear infections anyway. We also tried ear candles, big waste of time and money they were. Lots of trips back and forth to the doctors can be really distressing for everyone, we spent many a night at after hours so I know how hard that is, hugs

Aw, poor baby! I don’t have any advice on what to do, but I will mention him in my prayers. I remember having ear infections as a child, and I can’t imagine having that pain and the side effects of the major antibiotics can be much fun for him. I know my nephew had tubes and all sorts of problems with his ears as a child, and he outgrew it all by his teen age years.
You ARE a rocking blogger!

Poor wee man! I understand how you feel though! All my kids have ear infections in the last week. Carys is just about to finish up her 1st course of antibiotics too. They don’t muck around with Aidan either he went straight on the Augmentin too.
My nephew was just like Tyler though, always a happy little guy and never knew he had an infection. Hope he gets better soon.

Oh no… poor Tyler! That just sounds awful. I hope the antibiotics work.
I would seriously consider adding a chiropractor or osteopath, and acupuncture to your list of stuff to consider. I know some of these alternative/complementary therapies sound a bit woo woo, but so much is unknown still about health/mind/body connections that I think they are worth a try.

Oh Hannah – you have my sympathy as we went through all of this when Millie was 10mths and 2 – both sets fell out and I was an expert on every antibiotic available to her!!! In the end we elected to do the second operation but when they fell out it left a natural perforation for drainage and we also pursued the Bowens therapy which I wish we had known about before the 2nd operation as I firmly believe that it what stopped the infections! Good luck with the decision!!

Been having a chat to the ‘Power That Is’ for Tyler. Poor wee kid! No fun. I hope the antibiotics help take the edge off it for him. I get ear infections all the time thanks to my sinus trouble – and I can recognise the early stages and try to stop it getting worse. Heat helps a lot! I also take a herbal supplement for sinuses.
Good luck with the decision, its so difficult knowing what is the right thing to do – and there is so much conflicting information available.

Ear candling can work – it’s the heat from the candle and the massage that will help Tyler’s ears – any vacuum effect that some therapists claim doesn’t really exist. If you do go for candling, don’t let them open the candle and show you what came out – that’s caramelised candle wax, not ear wax. You could try doing some massage round his face and ears and his sinuses at home – that might help shift the nasties so they don’t accumulate as much.
