Gappy smile time …

I know what you’re all thinking: Wow, that was quick! The tooth has only been wiggly for a couple of days!

Nevertheless, it’s out! And here’s the story:

Yesterday morning we had a bit of drama. Ethan went to brush his teeth before school and soon came running out of the bathroom screaming, with blood all over his face and hands. Seems he had gone to open the flip-top toothpaste lid in his usual way — with his teeth.

I know. OUCH.

After that, the tooth became a lot wigglier. The gum had gone black underneath the tooth, so once we got to school I took him to see the dental nurse. She checked the tooth and said it looked fine, and that it would come out VERY soon. The blackness was just blood inside his gums, and nothing to worry about. She offered to pull it out then and there, but Ethan said no. So he went back to class and his teacher and I said the tooth would probably come out when he ate something.
But … when I picked him up, I discovered that the only thing he had eaten ALL DAY was a small mandarin. And he only ate that because his teacher carefully pushed each segment way into the back of his mouth so he could chew it. She’d tried to coax him to eat more, but he wouldn’t. Still, that’s above and beyond the call of duty in my opinion!

Needless to say, he was starving by 3 o’clock. And pale. And lethargic. When we got home I tried to get him to eat some soft food. He took one small bite of his sandwich and then screamed and spat it out, saying his tooth was sore. I gave him some Pamol and made him a banana berry smoothie. Then I put a DVD on and told him to sit there and wiggle his tooth until the movie was finished. He spent the rest of the afternoon sitting on the couch, wiggling his tooth, looking dejected and saying things like “how will I live?” … such a drama King!!

When Rob came home from work, I’d had enough of Ethan moping around and being miserable. I said “pull it”. And he did. I think Ethan was quite surprised to discover that it didn’t hurt and hardly bled.

The Tooth Fairy visited last night and left him $2. Generous, I know. But I figured 50 cents wouldn’t be much of a reward for him, considering he’d have to wait for another 3 teeth to fall out before he could buy something at the $2 shop (which is what he said he wanted to do with the money). So $2 per tooth is the going rate in this house.

He’s extremely proud of his “missing tooth”. He’s going to talk about it at school today. His friend Cian was in awe when he saw Ethan’s new smile this morning! Too cute!

  1. OMG, I can’t believe it is gone already! Hehehe, he is pretty cute with no tooth ;) I have goosebumps reading what you typed. 1) I don’t do blood so now I’m worried about this when Kamryn goes through it. 2) Rob PULLED it! I might have to make Hugh do the same lol. 3) The poor mite couldn’t eat. I hated losing teeth, just dreaded it! Did you find out any more on that tin?

  2. Oh Hannah I remember these times well! A tissue over the tooth helps when you pull them out, it gives some grip on the tooth and you can quickly use it to mop up the blood. My youngest Gemma is about to lose the last 2 teeth that she will lose and an era will be over – just to let you know, they pull their own out after a while! LOL
Love the photo too, what a cutie.

  3. He looks so cute.
$2 is the going rate in our house as well, Caitlyn has recently lost 2 front teeth so she really is ‘gappy’…lol

  4. lol – I have 3 drama queens! great tooth fairy rate you have going!

  5. so cute! Lol at not wanting to eat ! I’m dreading the drama that’s going to come when our very own Drama King loses his teeth!

  6. I was laughing as I read about your drama king. I bet next time he will hardly mope around as he knows what its like now. It can be quite an anxious time when the first tooth is wiggly.

  7. LOL what drama in your house!! Glad the tooth came out so quickly

  8. We are a $1 tooth house – but the tooth fairy had to pay without getting a tooth in return for the first two – he swallowed them! Glad he came through it OK – and he can eat again :)

  9. I love it when kids lose their 1st tooth! $2 wow, I’m sending my kids to your tooth fairy. That brought back memories of when I lost a tooth. I left a note for the fairy asking for a $1 and he left one back talking about inflation etc … hard to grasp when you’re about 6-7 years old. LOL Way to go Ethan!

  10. Way to go Ethan! Wow Hannah, the things to come in 4 or so years … We are at the stage of going through the pain of getting David’s first teeth … Love the going rate at the Blair household …

  11. LOL at the drama king. I remember the anticipation of pulling the tooth was always worse than the reality!

  12. hahaha oh poor Ethan – what a drama for the poor kid – hey its his first tooth! You have a tendency to become attached to whats attached.
What a gorgeously funny story Hannah!

  13. What a great story – I am sure he will appreciate it when he gets older. I love the photo and the sepia tint – very cool! This photo and story would make an awesome layout!

We all remember how it was to pull teeth – I wish my mom would have documented it like you – great journaling!

  14. Wow!! I still can’t believe it! He’s growing so fast…and what a great story :)

  15. Ethan looks so pleased about his gappy grin in that photo and love the story that goes with it. Can’t wait to see the layout ;)

  16. Great story. Poor Ethan though :-)

  17. Cool story Han, hope your going to scrapbook it! Love the ‘drama king’ comment!

  18. Great story Hannah. And let’s face it, the Tooth Fairy has to keep up with inflation just like the rest of us. $2 seem quite reasonable for all his (and your) pain and suffering.

  19. What a cute smile! Loved reading your story, this is another scrap worthy one Hannah! King of the wiggle tooth!
Such a lovely teacher btw – must make you feel good.

  21. [...] He has been pretty happy to just wiggle it a lot, and wait for it to come out by itself. Which I have to say, has been more pleasant than the drama of his first wiggly tooth. [...]
